TRACT – Mulago

TRANSFUSION AND TREATMENT OF SEVERE ANAEMIA IN AFRICAN CHILDREN, A RANDOMISED CONTROL TRIAL.

The Amazing Journey of the TRACT Study.

In September 2014, the TRACT trial was launched in Uganda and Malawi, with Uganda carrying 3 sites at Mulago national referral hospital, Mbale regional referral hospital and Soroti Hospital. TRACT was derived from Transfusion and Treatment of Severe Anaemia in African Children, a Randomised Control Trial and is a pragmatic study, aimed at improving the survival of children admitted with severe anaemia in Africa.

We have made tremendous progress across all the study sites since the launch of the trial; all the 3954 targeted participants have been recruited. Now however, we are still left with the daunting task of ensuring the completion of following-up all the remaining participants by December this year, seeking the lost-to-follow-ups and entry of all the data collected in the Case Report Forms (CRFs) and Source Documents into the database.

Although the study has been so rigorous, it is eventually drawing to a conclusion and we look forward to a successful completion come December, 2017.

TRACT protocol and along with other details regarding source of funding and principal investigators was published in a peer reviewed journal which can be accessed through this link; https://trialsjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13063-015-1112-4.
