Makerere University – Indiana University (MU-IU) Training Program

The Makerere University – Indiana University (MU-IU) Research Collaboration recently received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to offer training to upcoming Ugandan scientists in various fields and disciplines. The purpose of this training and development grant is to build research capacity to develop and strengthen the scientific leadership and expertise needed for research in Uganda and East Africa in general.
Global Health Uganda (GHU) on behalf of the MU-IU Research Collaboration now invites applications for Doctoral degree training in the following fields;.

1. Neuropsychology (1 position)
2. Epidemiology (1 position)
3. Immunology (1position).

The neuropsychology and epidemiology training is expected to be tenured through Makerere University starting the 2018/2019 academic year while the Immunology training will be at Indiana University in the USA from the academic year 2019/2020.

The successful applicants will be expected to undergo training within a structured and mentored environment. The focus of the programme is on research relevant to East Africa and all research projects will be within our existing and future programs in Uganda or Kenya and the USA. In particular, our research of observational and interventional studies focus on malaria, sickle cell anaemia, high dependency care, child health and development, neuro-cognitive functioning, central nervous system infections, epilepsy and biomarkers in these areas. Thus, the thesis research of the applicants will be in these areas. All applicants must also show a commitment to pursuing an academic and/or research career within East Africa.
The successful candidates will be expected to commit 100% of their time.

The fellowship will take care of the student’s tuition fees, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance.

These PhD fellowships will take a duration of four years. Applicants for the PhD in Neurosychology should have a Masters in Psychology or a related field and should have practiced for not less than 2 years, while applicants for the PhD in Immunology and epidemiology should either have a relevant Master of Science or Master of Medicine degree or its equivalent. Applicants who are currently undergoing Master’s degree programmes may apply but at the time of the interview should be able to present evidence that they shall have completed their programme by October 2018.

Female applicants are highly encouraged to apply.

All applicants should not be above 45 years of age at the time of applying.

Applications must be emailed to pamenya@globalhealthuganda.org and should consist of the following;

  • The completed full application form and daytime telephone contact number,
  • A personal statement (500-700 words) to explain suitability for the program.
  • A Research concept, maximum 1000 words, with a background, research question, hypothesis, objectives and methods and the anticipated analysis.
  • Supporting letters from two professional referees, together with their telephone and e-mail contacts.
  • A current curriculum vitae of not more than 3 pages.
  • Submit all documents as one PDF file with email Subject “PhD Fellowship in (Field).”

The closing date for receipt of applications is 20th August 2018.

  • Shortlisted listed candidates will be informed at the end of August and interviews will be conducted between 3 – 5th September 2018.
  • Please note that at the interview, you will be expected to make a 10 minute power point presentation of any scientific work you have conducted.

The successful candidates will be expected to take up the positions from 1st November 2018 (with the exception of the Immunology Student). Upon taking up the position, they will be expected to submit to their team of supervisors a full concept paper which will include a 2000 word document by 15th December 2018.
